A Message from Principal La Rue

April 1, 2015

Dear Montair Families,

This spring, our students will be participating in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), which is the state’s new academic testing program replacing the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. Last year, students in grades 3-8 and 11 participated in a computer-based field test. Although no scores were provided, it allowed students and teachers to experience online testing and new types of questions. Also, it helped evaluate how well our school’s technology systems could meet the demands of online tests and determine what resources teachers would need to better prepare students. I am confident that our school and staff are well prepared to administer the CAASPP.

As a reminder, CAASPP includes computer adaptive tests in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics in grades 3-8 and 11 as well as the remaining paper-based tests for science in grades 5, 8, and 10. During the test, students will use earphones to listen to videos and audio items. They will also be allowed to bring their own earbuds or earphones as they may be most comfortable using their own.

Following the Spring 2015 testing, individual student results can be available electronically within four weeks. The delivery of results takes into account machine scoring and hand-scoring. Students will receive individual score reports that include an overall scale score, performance level and claim level for ELA and mathematics. It is very important that you encourage students do their best when taking these tests. The test results can provide valuable information about student academic progress.  Please keep in mind this is still a learning experience and another transition year for our students. It is important to take your child’s results with a grain of salt.  It is more importantly you rely on your child’s report card and teacher recommendations as these assessments are not an indicator of their overall academic performance.

It will help us understand what knowledge, skills, and processes they have mastered and which ones they may still need to learn. These scores can allow parents and teachers to monitor student progress each year and help students reach and achieve their highest academic potential.

To learn about the types of questions on the tests, you can view and take the practice tests online at the California Department of Education (CDE) Smarter Balanced Practice Test Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp.

Our school’s testing information is provided in this table:

1st Annual Roadrunner Cup Golf Tournament

1st Annual Roadrunner Cup Golf Tournament

Montair Elementary vs. Rancho Romero Elementary

Monday, May 11, 2015 at Round Hill Country Club

Some sponsorships are still available, please see attached flyer.  Any inquires, please contact Shannon Mundelius or Carrie Nevis

Pre-Sale Registration for twosomes will start on March 5th – this is a benefit to our sponsors allowing them to buy their tickets in advance, as there are only 36 twosomes for each school available.

Regular Registration for twosomes will start on March 12th

Twosomes are $450 ($225 per golfer).  Spouses and friends of the school not playing golf are welcomed to attend the Horse Race and share in the dinner and festivities ($40 non-golfer ticket).

Golf Tournament Format:

The Roadrunners from Montair take on the Roadrunners from Rancho Romero in an 18-hole, 2-person scramble.  Foursomes of Montair and Rancho golfers will be formed by the golf committee based upon each golfer’s handicap or average 18-hole score (if no handicap is established).  Or, a twosome from Montair can request to play with a twosome from Rancho regardless of handicaps/average scores, so friends can play together.

The tournament is a “Ryder Cup Format”.  The winner of each match after 18-holes earns 1 point for his or her school.  The school with the most points wins the Roadrunner Cup and bragging rights.

After the Roadrunner Cup is determined, there will also be a Horse Race.  The top three low net teams from each school will make the Horse Race.  Two additional spots in the Horse Race will be raffled.  (Any golfer may buy as many raffle tickets he or she wishes, two names will be drawn, and the winning teams will be added to the Horse Race.)  The two-person team that wins the Horse Race will have their names engraved on the Roadrunner Cup and win a Spyglass Hill golf experience for four.
