Montair Alumni Scholarship

Montair Elementary School is proud to announce its annual Montair Alumni Scholarship. This $500 scholarship is being offered to a graduating high school senior who is a Montair Alumni.

This scholarship, being offered through the Montair PTA, acknowledges the achievement of a high school senior who has also given back to their community and school through volunteerism and participation in various community activities. This scholarship is for use during the fall semester/quarter following high school graduation at an accredited college, university, community college, trade or technical school.

The qualifications for this scholarship include that the applicant must have volunteered in the school and community and must be a Montair alumni. The applicant's high school must have a PTA unit in good standing and the student must be a member of the PTA/PTSA at his/her school.

Applications can be obtained at your High School career center or click here on our website. Responses can be mailed to Montair Elementary or emailed to Jen Kral at jen@kralfamily.net. The recipient will be notified by phone and will also be announced during senior awards night at their high school.

All responses are due by Tuesday, March 31, 2015.

Thank You for Your Support from the Montair Foundation President

WOW- what an Auction! Thank you all for your incredible support of our 19th Annual Montair Auction! Whether you participated in our Online Auction or attended Napastyle, our Live event this past Saturday at Diablo Country Club, your support made all the difference. At our Live Auction this past Saturday, parents were transported to the Wine Country. There was tremendous energy and excitement, and yet again our families met the challenge of funding the last half of this year's Foundation programs with great generosity. You may have heard that $9k was paid for Mrs. Knott's beautiful class art project (a special thank you to Bianca Gundry and Amy Moxley for the art direction) and $8k was paid for one of the parent-donated parties.  This is SO wonderful, and we hope these examples set the standard for future Auction items!

Preliminary numbers show that your generous donations and purchases allowed us to raise, through both Auctions, a total of $162,000 in gross revenue- a new revenue record! Over the next few weeks, we will be calculating our net profit, which is the more significant number. We also successfully raised $22,500 for this year's Fund-a-Need: Montair's new Technology Maintenance and Enhancement Fund.

Thank you again to our entire Auction Team, particularly our Live Auction co-chairs Patty Giammona, Bean Chun as well as our Online Auction chair, Betsy Wolf for bringing us this successful fundraiser!

Item Pick-Up Days for Online, Silent and Live Auction winnings were last week Thursday and Friday Feb 26-27th in front of the Montair Office. Please login to our Auction site to process your purchases in advance and print your receipt for your tax deduction donation:  http://montairfoundation.schoolauction.net/auction2015

A Message from Principal La Rue

Dear Montair Families,

I would like to take the opportunity to personally thank you for being such wonderful students and fabulous parents at Montair Elementary.  I am very grateful to work and live in such a great community.

State Testing and Vacation Plans

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) primary purpose is to assist teachers, administrators, and pupils and their parents by promoting high-quality teaching and learning through the use of a variety of assessment approaches and item types. At Montair, we are currently making preparations to take the Smarter Balanced Field Assessment this spring.  Only grades 3-5 will take this assessment.   Furthermore 5th grade students will take the California State Standards Science test this spring.  I will continue to communicate relevant information about testing to all families in the coming weeks.  Here are the district testing windows:

Smarter Balanced Assessments: Computer Adaptive Tests

(ELA, Math and Performance Tasks)

District Testing Window: Elementary and Middle Schools (March 10-May 22, 2015)

CST/CMA/CAPA: Paper-Pencil Tests (Science for Grades 5, 8 & 10)

District Testing Window: April 16-May 20, 2015

If all children are to succeed and progress as learners it is important to note that every minute of the school day counts during this time of the school year.  Please schedule vacations and appointments outside the school day. We are working hard everyday at Montair and taking children away, even with an independent study contract, is never the same. With the academic rigor and pace of learning going on, it is hard for students to make up the time they miss.  Thank you for understanding and working with us.

Bicycle Safety

In the light of the recent traffic accident involving a student cyclist on Green Valley Blvd.  I would like to remind students and parents of safety precautions while biking to and from school.

  *   Look and listen for traffic. Also, look for things that could make you fall, like potholes and storm grates. Never use a cell phone or wear headphones.

  *   Watch for vehicles going in and out of driveways.

  *   Stop before crossing the street, entering a road, or turning. Look left, right, left, and behind you for traffic, including pedestrians, bicycles, and cars. If you are allowed to ride in the street,

  *   Ride single file and in the same direction as cars.

  *   Ride to the right side of the road, but far enough from parked cars to avoid any car doors that suddenly open.

Upward and onward,

Mr. La Rue
